Relations

For a While sees familiar things before they have settled into one meaning. You think you know what you are looking at. Then you stay, and what felt finished becomes a question again. An idea can be tried, argued with, set aside, and brought back changed. Sometimes the attempt settles something. Sometimes it makes the question harder. Or the work may stay exactly as it is while the person returning to it changes.

1.1 An empty space, as an open white room. Open for everything to enter and anything to leave. There are no barriers — no doors, no windows. No clutter, no order, no disorder. No nothing. It possesses the possibility to be filled and feels like a state between filling and clearing the space, thereby inviting (engaging) in communication.

1.2 A time between 23:59:59 and 0:00:01, where the last second lies and where everything starts. A time when nothing can be done. A time to ponder and reconsider. A time to find yourself. So no matter which direction it goes, to an end or just starting, it’s when For a While operates.

1.3 An echo. It fills the space with its presence and has no identity. You can easily be tricked by where it’s coming from or where it’s headed. Sometimes, it’s you who made it. Sometimes, it’s the only thing you can hear. Sometimes, it’s your only mark and guidance to follow. If there are not any, you can create one yourself.

1.4 The slightest movement—blunted, off-speed action—created toward an object, person, or any larger subject (a phenomenon, society, etc.) or emanating from such. A sluggish nature of movement manifests a state of oscillation between complete standstill and confident motion. Such a vibrating state that’s never calm, never quiet, showing an eagerness to change and inability to stay put. A gesture.

1.5 Solid yet fragile. It’s on you to keep safe. Modest and arrogant at the same time. Quiet but leaves an unforgettable tactile experience. Original, authentic, and natural, even when it’s human-made. Still pure, made by people with natural intentions, hence for people. Because after all, there are only human-to-human interactions.

1.6 Defined not by itself but the perspective you take. Strict to such an extent that is enough to get the subject across. Free in everything else. Relatively subjective, as subjective a point of view; with an encompassing ability to pivot. It’s never all or nothing, unless you say so.

1.7 An almost legible arrangement. Its parts are there, but the way they hold together is not always given. One detail suggests an answer; another puts it in doubt. You come closer, step back, return to the first thing you saw. It asks for that work. A connection can hold for a moment and come apart on a second look. There is no fixed distance from which it all becomes clear.

1.8 Pure excitement, a case of impression. Naive. Not necessarily pleasing (the rose can hurt you if treated carelessly). Expressed in a whisper, rather than a shout. A feeling that can be seen in some people’s eyes. A cry from joy is the last degree. “God, that’s it…”

Studio & Imprint

a. Founded in 2020 by Maksim Morozov, For a While has changed over the years into the state you see now. Much of that change came through projects that stayed out of view. Some took the form of objects, films, graphics, interfaces, and other things. They called for research, design, development, and whatever else the work required.

b. The people working with the studio change from project to project. Katja Ishtokina, Alex Morozov, Gregory Klochnyk, Denys Chumak, and others have contributed at different times and in different ways. There are more names to add, and more work still to show.

c. The only graphic element used on this page depicts a wilted rose, version 9.03. It represents the temporary nature of things: their presence, their alteration, and the time in which both happen. This idea appears to some degree throughout every project. Sometimes it is easy to see; elsewhere it takes longer to notice.

d. The website uses Story 13, a typeface designed by Maksim Morozov specifically for For a While between 2023 and 2026.
